Abstract

GAYTAN, Rosa Isabel. Suave Patria, a new, nurturing, and authentic homeland for Mexicans. López Velarde in the magazine El Maestro. Sig. his [online]. 2021, vol.23, n.45, pp.50-79.  Epub June 02, 2021. ISSN 1665-4420.

This essay reviews Ramón López Velarde’s contribution to El Maestro, a very important magazine from the Vasconcelista education project. There are two works by López Velarde published in it in 1921: the essay Novedad de la Patria (News from homeland) and the poem La Suave Patria (The Soft Land). Both are the poet’s response to the poetic wave of patriotism unleashed by the upcoming commemoration of the centenary of Mexico’s political independence and with whom he calls to pay attention to the unheard, the minutiae in which he finds poetry. His version of the nation was intimate and not historical or political, it came through quotidian sensations and reflections. This new homeland was a loving, prodigal, vivacious and careful mother: more a sensation than an idea, more emotions than abstract concepts. The work of this magazine, El Maestro, is part of the educational task of Álvaro Obregón’s government that seek to build a national culture based on the work of teachers throughout the country that were emerging from the battles of the Mexican Revolution and undertook task of reconstruction. López Velarde does not pay in the idea of a heroic and military country, he undertakes a different path.
