Abstract

LISCIA, María Silvia Di. Dentro y fuera del hogar. Mujeres, familias y medicalización en Argentina, 1870-1940. Sig. his [online]. 2005, vol.7, n.13, pp.94-119. ISSN 1665-4420.

In this paper, we analyse the process of medicalización in Argentina between 1870-1940, considering mainly middle and high class women’s participation as one of the actors who, with a progressively subordinated role, held an influence on popular sectors. This is a key period in the simultaneous construction of hygienic discourse and the reinforcement of gender roles, where maternity exerted an influence as a value in itself. In this process, different stages are examined, linked to the socio-economic development and the State configuration. Putting into practice medical-hygienic discourse implied a remarkable effort for women in home tasks, without the respective solution, for most of the Argentine population, of necessary material condictions.

Keywords : medicalización; mujeres; Argentina; familias.
