Tin oxide and Titanium oxide thin films were deposited on pyrex glass substrates using the laser ablation technique. The obtained deposits were amorphous and were thermally treated in order to obtain the crystalline phase. The characterization of the films included determination of the composition (EDS and EFA), of the microstructure (Raman spectroscopy and XRD), of the surface morphology (SEM), of the optical properties (UV-Vis) and the resistivity. The results of the structural characterization showed that for the tin oxide case the casiterite phase was obtained, whereas for the titanium oxide the anatase phase was obtained. In both cases, the results of the composition measurements showed that the obtained oxides are stoichiometric, and uniform along the film thickness. The tin oxide thin films have a resistivity of the order of 4.2 x 10-2 ohm-cm. The bilayer (TiO2/SnO2) has an optical transparency of 65 % in the range from 400 up to 700 nm. The obtained bilayer system has properties that make them potentially useful in photocatalysis.
