Abstract

GONZALEZ MEDINA, Mario Alberto  and  RODRIGUEZ PICHARDO, Catalina. Socio-demographic factors associated with performance in language and communications and in mathematics in Nuevo León. Innov. educ. (Méx. DF) [online]. 2018, vol.18, n.76, pp.105-126. ISSN 1665-2673.

The objective of this study was to determine the socio-demographic factors associated with academic performance in language and communications and in mathematics among 4,007 6th grade students in Nuevo León, Mexico. After determining the results for the analysis of variance, Man-Whitney U Tests, Kruskal-Wallis, binary logistical regression, the Pearson correlation and simple linear regression, we found that the negative factors associated with performance were the following: type of public school and being male. The positive factors were the following: low levels of marginalization and an age that corresponds to the grade level. The positive association between academic performance in mathematics and in language and communication was confirmed. We propose an ecological educational intervention model using microsystems, mesosystems, exosystems and macrosystems, aiming to improve students’ reading and mathematics abilities.
