Abstract

PRIETO QUEZADA, María Teresa; CARRILLO NAVARRO, José Claudio  and  LUCIO LOPEZ, Luis Antonio. Virtual violence and bullying among university students: The dark side of social networks. Innov. educ. (Méx. DF) [online]. 2015, vol.15, n.68, pp.33-47. ISSN 1665-2673.

The present study presents the results of the research carried out in the University Center of Administrative Economic Sciences (CUCEA) at the University of Guadalajara, which permitted us to identify the rate of face-to-face mistreatment and the processes of cyberbullying among students at this educational level. The center has a population of approximately 17 000 students, and a representative sample of 2 493 students was taken, comprised of 1 243 men and 1 250 women. The statistical sample was processed by means of descriptive statistic techniques. The results demystify the social conception -more or less generalized among researchers-that bullying and cyberbullying are phenomena exclusive to earlier educational levels, since the evidence found demonstrates not only its existence, but also the specific nuances of this reality in the higher education environment.

Keywords : Violence; bullying; cyberbullying; social networks; university students; higher education.
