Abstract

MENDOZA RAMOS, Arturo. Practices of docent evaluation and writing skills required at the postgraduate level. Innov. educ. (Méx. DF) [online]. 2014, vol.14, n.66, pp.147-175. ISSN 1665-2673.

Writing skills are indispensable for postgraduate students to be academically competent. However, in the Spanish-speaking context, studies show that these skills are scarce, which is why we carried out an exploratory and descriptive study. The objective was to identify, from the postgraduate instructor’s perspective, the relevance of writing and the writing skills that are important for academic success. To this end we designed an open questionnaire and a Likert scale type survey. This instrument was then electronically sent to instructors at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. We received 63 questionnaires from 27 postgraduate academic disciplines. The results confirmed the relevance of writing at this educational level and the importance of these skills are essential for effective written communication and in the construction of knowledge. In conclusion, we emphasize the need for the explicit instruction of academic writing at the postgraduate level.

Keywords : Academic postgraduate writing; postgraduate evaluation practices; writing skills.
