Abstract

ELIAS, Rodolfo. Schools and citizenship education: Performance of Paraguayan students in international study of civics. Innov. educ. (Méx. DF) [online]. 2012, vol.12, n.59, pp.49-60. ISSN 1665-2673.

This article reviews the participation of Paraguay in the International Study on Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS 2009). The results show that young Paraguayans have a low understanding of concepts and principles of democracy in conjunction with favorable attitudes toward authoritarian practices. It also highlights positive aspects, such as the high degree of student participation in organizations and in civic activities. The article analyzes these results and some explanatory hypotheses considering the political and social changes that Paraguay has experienced since the fall of the dictatorship in 1989 and the beginning of an educational reform in the early nineties.

Keywords : academic performance; civic education; democracy; education reform; Paraguay.
