Abstract

VAZQUEZ-PAZ, Flor Madalitza et al. Synthesis of ceramic supports based on HA+ In2TiO5 for accelerated growth of Mycobacterium smegmatis. Biotecnia [online]. 2020, vol.22, n.3, pp.125-130.  Epub Feb 10, 2021. ISSN 1665-1456.  https://doi.org/10.18633/biotecnia.v22i3.1197.

Recently, ceramic materials have been used as a substrate in biomedical applications. Mycobacterium smegmatis (Ms), with its short generation time and low biosafety requirements, is considered as an appropriate model to study Mycobacteria in general and is useful to study mycobacterial physiology and for assays of anti-tuberculosis agents. The aim of this work was to synthesize ceramic supports based on hydroxyapatite (HA) and indium titanate (In2TiO5) to evaluate the ability for Ms growth on them. The structural characterization of these supports was carried out by SEM, EDS and XRD. The increase of the oxygen concentration is attributed to photocatalytic effect promoted by indium titanate, after supports immersed on MDB 7H9 were exposed to sunlight. Indium titanate was responsible for the oxygen increase and, consequently, the eight-fold increase on the minimal inhibitory concentration in rezasurine assays on microplate. The use of this ceramic support resulted in a 24 h earlier Ms growth with respect to the suportless control, which is an important time save on the diagnosis of Mycobacterium.
