Abstract

CALLEJAS, Guillermo. On the Re-conceptualization of Different Meanings of τὸ ὂν. An Analysis of Categories 2, 1a 20-1b9 and Some Passages of Aristotle’s Metaphysics. Tóp. Sem [online]. 2019, n.42, pp.205-234.  Epub Jan 10, 2020. ISSN 2594-0619.

The present article has the purpose of analyzing the expressions defined by Aristotle in Categories 2. On the base of this analysis, I will try to offer some arguments in favor of the following hypothesis: The tree expressions of Categories 2 are re-conceptualized by Aristotle under the terms of “necessary” (ἀναγκαῖον), “what is for the most part” (ὡς ἐπὶ τὸ πολύ) and “accident” (συμβεβηκὸς), that is, as three different expressions of things that are (τά ὄντα), which, having the ability to subsists on (ὑπάρχειν) a subject and signify it, are shown as three possible kinds of predication. I believe that the supporting of this hypothesis could not only contribute to the understanding of these terms, but would also reveal the necessity of Aristotle to analyze the same concepts from different approaches (in this case, in a logical-linguistic and in an ontological approach) what could be a justification that explains the re-conceptualization of his own expressions. On the basis of the analysis of the necessity we will be able to conceive some logical and ontological implications of the Aristotelian concept of form (εἰδός).

Keywords : necessary; general; accident.
