Abstract

GARCIA NEGRONI, María Marta  and  LIBENSON, Manuel. Argumentation, evidentiality and discourses markers. The case of por lo visto (it seems [that]). Tóp. Sem [online]. 2016, n.35, pp.51-75. ISSN 2594-0619.

Based on the description of the internal (AI) and external (AE) argumentations of the verbver (i.e. 'to see') (Carel and Ducrot, 2005), we propose an analysis of the semantic-argumentative instructions contained in one of the discourse markers (DM) derived from that verb: por lo visto. The semantic path that goes from the verb to the discourse markeris a discursive process in which some of the argumentative points of view evoked by the perception verb get cristalized in the semantics of por lo visto, enabling the DM the encoding of an indirect evidential meaning (both inferential or quotative). According to our hypothesis, while the inferential meaning communicated by or lo visto is the result of an internalization process of one of the abductive external argumentations (AE) connected conclusively by por lo tanto (therefore) of the verb ver (ver Y PLT inferior X/'To see, therefore, to infer'), the quotative meaning emerges from the internalization of one of the transgressive external argumentations of the form no ver (not to see) (Decir X SE Neg. ver aún X/ 'In spite of saying X, Not seeing X yet'). We also have shown that both internalization processes maintain the internal argumentation (AI) of the verb ver (algo existe PLT poder dar fe de ese algo/ 'something exists, therefore, it is possible to attest its existence').

Keywords : evidentiality; argumentation; por lo visto.
