Abstract

VASQUEZ-GARIBAY, Edgar M et al. Risk factors associated to the nutritional status of infants attending day care centers. Bol. Med. Hosp. Infant. Mex. [online]. 2007, vol.64, n.1, pp.18-28. ISSN 1665-1146.

Introduction. Objective: To identify risk factors associated to the nutritional status of infants 3 to 12 months of age attending to day care centers in Guadalajara, Mexico. Material and methods. In a cross sectional study 123 infants 3 to 12 months from 5 day care centers of Guadalajara were included. It was considered deficit of indices length/age, weight/age and weight/length with Z score < -l SD. Socioeconomic, demographic, dietetic, pathological, and family dynamic variables were explored. With odds ratio and logistic regression, model variables with malnutrition risk factors were identified. Results. The mother's income lower than 3 minimum wage [OR 3.95 (1.38-11.4), P =0.003]; delayed weaning [RM 6.71 (1.92-24-4), P < 0.001] and cow's milk intake [RM 4.95 (0.93-23.5), P =0.04] were associated with length/age deficit. Family dysfunction in 7% and un-married couple, mixed and long hours stay at day care centers were also associated risk factors (P < 0.05). In dysfunctional families, the onset of weaning was earlier (P =0.015). Conclusion. Deficit in length/age was associated with low income, delayed ending of weaning, duration in day care centers and cow's milk intake. Family dysfunction increases the risk of inadequate infant feeding practices in the pediatric population studied.
