This paper focuses on the significance of knowledge management (KM) relating to the transformation of schools. It is based on the facts that in the future, knowledge management will be a key element in the institutional transformation of the scholastic educative system in Mexico. Knowledge management in educational institutions is a recent phenomenon, and is not yet considered a full-length field of knowledge and practice, thus the relevance to analyze the context and purposes from which it originated, its current elements in the process of its constitution, and how KM is integrated in the educational field and academic organizations.
