Abstract

BARONA RIOS, César; PAUL DE VERJOVSKY, Janet; MORENO RUIZ, Marcela  and  LESSARD, Claude. The Views on the Nature of Science (NOS) of a Group of Teachers in a Teacher's Education Program in Science. REDIE [online]. 2004, vol.6, n.2, pp.1-19. ISSN 1607-4041.

This paper presents evidence of how a group of science teachers in a university graduate program -a Masters in Science Teaching (MST)- modified their initial profiles concerning their views on the nature of science (NOS). The empirical information, collected at different moments during the two years of the MST, comes from a single group of 11 teachers who taught scientific subjects, mainly in high schools affiliated to the state university that offered the Masters program. The results, in this first portion of the research project, indicate that the MST improved the initially incoherent profiles of the group of teachers as the overall pattern of the group shifted towards relativism. We discuss the difficulties of reducing the NOS to a technical model of content organization. We also indicate a line of interpretation connected to the scientific literacy of the teachers.

Keywords : Scientific literacy; teacher education; adoption (ideas).
