Abstract

ARENAS, Nelly. El proyecto chavista: Entre el viejo y el nuevo populismo. Desacatos [online]. 2006, n.22, pp.137-156. ISSN 2448-5144.

This paper highlights the characteristics that identify traditional historical populisms, as well as those of the newest generation, known as neo-populisms, and analyses the administration of Hugo Chávez in order to make a comparison with both kinds of regimes. It concludes that despite its militaristic tendencies, which do not constitute a trait that characterized old populisms, Chávez's project for the most part repeats the same attributes as those regimes, and also shares some of the same features that distinguish the most recent populist governments and movements in Latin America.

Keywords : populism; neo-populism; chavismo; militarism; democracy.
