The aim of this paper is to investigate certain problems and challenges of queer theory in its analysis of transsexuality and to reflect on the connection between gender theories and what we will call "progressive identity narratives". In order to do this, we will consider some objections that appear in Second Skins: the Body Narratives of Transexuality, by Jay Prosser. In particular, we will examine how Judith Butler and Jack Halberstam have been criticized by Prosser, so we can extract some conclusions about the intrinsic relation between the narrative structure of gender theories and the valuation of the degree of authenticity and transgression of gender identities.
