Abstract

HERNANDEZ RODRIGUEZ, Alfonso. Trabajo y cuerpo: El caso de los hombres enfermeros. La ventana [online]. 2011, vol.4, n.33, pp.210-241. ISSN 1405-9436.

The sexual division of labor provides spaces for and has a different effect on men and women, guides their roles, pervades the career choice, and more, leaving its mark on both as an extension of gender roles. This paper inquires, from the gender perspective, if men have disadvantages or advantages when working in a job considered "female", sexual segregation at work, and the symbolic burden that the body and masculinity possess as a privilege, a result of the socalled "patriarchal dividend". In the case of male nurses, by occupying a sexed space where "they don't belong" they face social sanctions, according to the gender regime established, but the fact that being males also gives them a position of privilege above that social sanction.

Keywords : Male nurses; gender regime; social sanction; patriarchal dividend; non-traditional employment.
