Abstract

MAIER, Elizabeth  and  ALONSO MENESES, Guillermo. Sexo y cultura: disputando el significado del matrimonio y la familia. La ventana [online]. 2011, vol.4, n.33, pp.117-150. ISSN 1405-9436.

This article explores the discursive dispute for the cultural meaning of sexuality, reproduction, and the family in Mexico. This dispute is being played out today around the issue of same sex marriage and adoption rights, which were legalized in Mexico City, secured by the Supreme Court, and vehemently opposed by the Catholic Church and other conservative forces. The article is an initial attempt to identify conceptual and contextual factors that facilitate an understanding these discursive differences. Our analysis places the constitution and mobilization of collective actors within the broader framework of the tension between cosmopolitan and parochial visions of society, which ultimately remits to the relationship between Church and State.

Keywords : Dispute; same sex-couples; marriage; adoption; secular State; Church.
