Abstract

MENDEZ DELGADO, Alba Verónica; CUEVAS QUINTERO, José Luis  and  MARTINEZ GOMEZ, Francisco. Globesity: a space-time analysis, 1980-2015. Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2023, vol.23, n.72, pp.661-689.  Epub June 16, 2023. ISSN 2448-6183.  https://doi.org/10.22136/est20231827.

During the last decades, growing obesity has been associated with economic, political, and social changes; some of them, derived from globalization. The objective of this work is to analyze its behavior over space and time. The key variables are the obesity in the countries and the KOF globalization index for the years 1980-2015. The empirical strategy consisted of detecting the spatial dependence and estimating the obesity-globalization relationship with spatial models. There was a positive relationship between both variables, while social globalization is the one that explains the phenomenon of obesity to a greater extent.

Keywords : globesity; obesity; globalization; spatial econometrics.
