Abstract

NEME CASTILLO, Omar; VALDERRAMA SANTIBANEZ, Ana Lilia  and  CHIATCHOUA, Césaire. Determinants of productive water consumption and effects on economic activity in Mexico. Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2021, vol.21, n.66, pp.505-537.  Epub Oct 04, 2021. ISSN 2448-6183.  https://doi.org/10.22136/est20211659.

Economic activities at the state level, which operate with different inputs and technology, register heterogeneous water consumption levels affecting their economic activity. The document seeks, first, to identify the factors that determine the consumption of water resources on a productive way and, secondly, the effect of this consumption on economic activity. The analysis is made of 18 economic activities in Mexico in 2018. It is found, through cross-sectional estimates, that the demand for inputs, mainly employed personnel, increases water consumption, while it, in absolute terms, contributes to economic activity in all the sectors.

Keywords : water consumption; gross census added value; profitability; revealed comparative advantage index.
