Depression has great influence on the burden of disease in the elderly population all over the world. So that, the aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of depression in a population based spanish cohort of people aged 65 years and older (N = 762) and to study its associated factors. Logistic regression analysis were run, taking depression as the dependent covariate and sociodemographic, health, social networking and social help factors as independent covariates. The prevalence of depression was 29.7 per cent. Being woman, having low incomes and/or low level of education, having at least one grandchild, having poor self rated health and/or disability and has been given external help were associated with depression in an independent and strong way.
