Abstract

CIGANDA, Daniel  and  PARDO, Ignacio. Emancipation and household formation among Uruguayan youth: recent transformations. Pap. poblac [online]. 2014, vol.20, n.82, pp.203-231. ISSN 2448-7147.

The article focuses on the recent changes in the calendar of home leaving in Uruguay, in the context of a larger transformation of the transitions to adulthood. Although we did not find a general trend towards older ages at home leaving, youth from higher socioeconomic levels delayed their transition out of the parental home. Men and women's behavior converged over the period, although maybe less than we would have expected. In any case, the most relevant differences do not correspond to timing changes but to changes in the type of households: the proportion of nuclear households has markedly decreased, giving way to an increase in non-family (shared and single) households.

Keywords : Home leaving; transitions to adulthood; youth; Uruguay.
