Abstract

VARGAS VALLE, Eunice  and  CRUZ PINEIRO, Rodolfo. Job search among youth according to their labor participation and protection in Mexico. Pap. poblac [online]. 2014, vol.20, n.81, pp.213-245. ISSN 2448-7147.

The objective of this study was to analyze the search for employment among the youth population with or without a job and its associated factors in Mexico, mainly focusing on youth labor insertion and the social protection of those who work. Other goal of the study was to describe the total proportion of youths in search of a job within regions by these characteristics. The data came from the National Youth Survey 2010 and descriptive and multivariate statistics were used. On the one hand, the odds of searching for employment were considerably higher among unprotected workers than among those with social protection. On the other hand, non-working males registered higher odds of searching for employment than unprotected workers, while non-working males exhibited similar odds of job search than those female workers without social protection. Finally, compared to the national average, the search for employment of young males was higher in the southern regions, which are characterized by a low supply of jobs with social protection. These results support the idea of a high level of job search among young workers in low-quality jobs and contribute to a better understanding of the labor demands of Mexican youth.

Keywords : Search for employment; youth; labor insertion; social protection; regions.
