Abstract
MEDOR, Ducange. Divorce, discrimination and self-perception in a group of women in Guadalajara, Jalisco. Pap. poblac [online]. 2013, vol.19, n.78, pp.41-64. ISSN 2448-7147.
This paper poses that a divorce can mean for women an opportunity to recover their freedom, their self-esteem and empower themselves; it's also about the dynamic of discrimination and gossips that the lack of a man as consort uses to cause to those women and the negative ways they tend to perceive themselves and their own family. Through semi-structured in depth interviews, the construction and treatment of live stories of thirty-one divorced women, I conclude that divorce is a sort of transgression of the gender social structures, a cause of shame and self-segregation, in the short term, but in the median or long term, it symbolizes possibilities of self-reinvention as freed and empowered women.
Keywords : Divorce; discrimination; shame; empowerment; self-reinvention.
