Abstract

JIMENEZ-ORNELAS, René Alejandro  and  CARDIEL-TELLEZ, Leticia. Suicide and social trends in Mexico: 1990-2011. Pap. poblac [online]. 2013, vol.19, n.77, pp.205-229. ISSN 2448-7147.

The suicide mortality rates in Mexico have risen steadily over the past two decades as in the rest of the world. This has led to consider suicide as a health problem that must be analyzed from a multidimensional approach to examine the socio demographic characteristics of suicide to generate preventive measures for this problem and try to decrease the incidence of suicide, which currently is in the top three causes of death in the country. This paper aims to present an overview about the trend of suicide in Mexico of the period 1990-2011 and show the general characteristics of suicidal behavior in the country and the possible factors influencing the high rates of suicide.

Keywords : Suicide in Mexico; causes of suicide; suicidal; suicide mortality rates; suicidal behavior.
