Abstract

MONTERO-MENDOZA, Elda. Mortality in an indigenous area of Veracruz: transmissible and non-transmissible diseases. Pap. poblac [online]. 2011, vol.17, n.68, pp.41-68. ISSN 2448-7147.

This article analyses the causes of general mortality and the social and economic environment of Nahua and Popoluca people in four municipalities of the South-East of Veracruz. The information was obtained from death certificates reported from 2003 to 2007. Secondary sources were consulted and interviews were held with key informants from the four municipalities with the aim of obtaining information on sociodemographic and economic indicators and also health. In the results, we discuss two aspects: the main causes of mortality in men and women for the four municipalities and the importance of death certificate as a primary source of mortality statistics.

Keywords : mortality; indigenous population; gender; poverty; Nahua; Popoluca; Veracruz.
