Abstract
DE OLIVEIRA, Orlandina and MORA SALAS, Minor. Social inequalities and transition to adulthood in contemporary Mexico. Pap. poblac [online]. 2008, vol.14, n.57, pp.117-152. ISSN 2448-7147.
In this article the process of transition to adulthood in contemporary Mexico is approached; the analysis is performed based on the information from the 2000 National Survey on Youth for youths aged between 15 and 29. The study gives an account of the order, occurrence proportions and risk of seven social events associated with the change from youth to adulthood. The empirical reaches and the pertinence of the normative transition model as heuristic resource in the study of the analyzed phenomenon is challenged. The research reveals that transition to adulthood is a complex process which is not free, in its shape, content and temporariness, from the conditioners derived from a society whose social relations are embedded in a context of heavily stressed social inequalities.
