Abstract

GARCIA, Brígida  and  DE OLIVEIRA, Orlandina. Women heads of households and their family dynamics. Pap. poblac [online]. 2005, vol.11, n.43, pp.29-51. ISSN 2448-7147.

Our particular interest in this paper is to complement the most frequent discussion about material living conditions of women-headed households, with an analysis of less known dimensions of their family life, such as the division of domestic work and children's care, members participation in decision making and the presence or absence of violence, always emphasizing the social differentiation that is present in these residential families. The data come from the Survey on Family Dynamics for the metropolitan areas of Mexico and Monterrey (Dinaf). Women heads of households are studied in comparison with wives and other women residents, using multiple classification analysis.

Keywords : women heads of households; family dynamics; division of domestic work; domestic violence.
