Abstract
DUHAU, Emilio and GIGLIA, Ángela. Public space and polycentricity: Local dimension and urbanity in low class settlements of Mexico City. Pap. poblac [online]. 2004, vol.10, n.41, pp.167-194. ISSN 2448-7147.
Within the framework of the debate about the inherent qualities and the crisis and transformations of public urban spaces, this article addresses the concern (referred to European as well as Latin American and Mexican cities) about the urban isolation of the inhabitants of working-low class urban peripheries and the absence in such peripheries of those public spaces frequented by anonymous and socially heterogenous users and unknown walkers that have caracterized modern cities. To that end, there is analyzed the first-hand empirical evidences regarding to sociability patterns and of socio-spatial practices that take place in a sample of neighborhoods of Mexico City, characterized by different degrees of urban consolidation.
Keywords : urban centrality; neighborhoods; public spaces; metropolis; urban peripheries; Mexico City.
