Abstract

IRACHETA CENECORTA, Alfonso. Governance in the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico. Pap. poblac [online]. 2003, vol.9, n.36, pp.211-239. ISSN 2448-7147.

This paper analyzes the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico from different perspectives. It emphasizes the urbanization process and the metropolitan government economic and social challenges. The physical process of urbanization shows an increment of undercapitalized squatter settlements and a clear trend of metropolitan sprawl and conurbation creating a so called "megalopolis" (a metropolis of metropolis). This urbanization is in a process of covering the whole central region of Mexico which is comprise of 6 states and more than 30 million inhabitants (2000.) Finally, we argue that the public administration and governance problem faced by the ZMVM is due to the lack of political will and understanding of the problem by both the government of the Federal District and the government of the State of Mexico. These states share half of metropolitan population and urban area.
