Abstract

ORDORICA MELLADO, Manuel. Mexico in the context of demographic training in Latin America. Pap. poblac [online]. 2003, vol.9, n.36, pp.47-77. ISSN 2448-7147.

The development of Demography programs and research in Mexico is tightly related to the social and economic dynamic and to the historical events. In our country, the subject of Demography has been present for over fifty years; first, because of the slow population growth and the population distribution in the country, and later because of the rapid demographic growth. These events bring about an interest in the Demography field. The present article presents a historical account of the training in Demography in Mexico and Latin America. It argues that the framework and new methods of training Demography have to be guided by the future evolution of the population phenomena. The trained demographer has to be able to identify the future central topics in the field, in order to rearrange the research and training programs.
