Abstract

VARELA PETITO, Gonzalo. Características sociodemográficas de la población uruguaya residente en México. Pap. poblac [online]. 2002, vol.8, n.33, pp.145-172. ISSN 2448-7147.

The present article covers the results of a survey about Uruguayan nationals residing in Mexico. This population forms a significant share of the '"Cono Sur" migrants in Mexico. This migration is the result of the economic and political crisis in the 70's in the region. Because of the political reasons and the underlying economic reasons that caused this migration, this group has specific characteristics. Whole families migrated, with high education levels. After two decades, most of them have integrated to the country, some have married Mexicans, attainted higher degrees, obtained a good labor insertion, but have an uneven political link with their country of origin. This article analyzes lhe basic sociodemographic variables, labor insertion characteristics, family and education characteristics, and qualitative views of their adaptation to the host country Mexico.
