Abstract

STEFONI, Carolina. Mujeres inmigrantes peruanas en Chile. Pap. poblac [online]. 2002, vol.8, n.33, pp.117-144. ISSN 2448-7147.

The present paper studies the Peruvian migration into Chile, with special emphasis in the particular labor and social exclusion situation suffered by migrant women in Santiago. Peruvian migration is mainly feminine and with a high labor concentration in domestic jobs. Why are domestic jobs the most important source of work for these women? Is it sufficient to point out the "cheap costs of labor" or are there other social and cultural arguments that explain why Chilean employers contract and prefer Peruvian women?.
