Abstract

ROBICHAUX, David. El sistema familiar mesoamericano y sus consecuencias demográficas: un régimen demográfico en el México indígena. Pap. poblac [online]. 2002, vol.8, n.32, pp.59-94. ISSN 2448-7147.

Research on the residential family in the social sciences in Mexico has failed to take into account the country's different cultural traditions and has assumed the existence of a single model of the family. This article proposes the concept of "Mesoamerican family system" that allows us to grasp a specific type of developmental cycle of domestic groups characteristic of broad sectors of Mexico's rural population. One of its features is virilocal posmarital residence that makes it possible for new couples to be formed without the need for a separate dwelling. The consequence is an extremely low age at marriage and rapid population growth, constituting a demographic regime.
