Abstract

FUENTES CARDONA, María Guadalupe. WhatsApp in Teaching. New Arenas of Teacher Participation in Academic Life. RMIE [online]. 2022, vol.27, n.95, pp.1279-1304.  Epub Jan 30, 2023. ISSN 1405-6666.

The objective of this article is to identify the ways that teachers and educational authorities use the WhatsApp application. The research was carried out with support from critical studies on new media and digital culture and a qualitative methodology based on the observation of chats, along with semi-structured in-depth interviews in two urban elementary schools in Mexico City. Ways that both teachers and authorities use the application were identified, as well as the formats and content of chats and the characteristics of participating on the platform. Blurred workday boundaries, the legitimation of new forms and content of participation in school, and hierarchies far from the traditional order are findings that have become more relevant in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Keywords : teaching; social networks; new technologies; teacher participation; leadership.
