This research focuses on the professional development of high school teachers as students are transitioning to universities. The objective is to determine the value of competency-based education and its influence on educating students in key competencies. A case study was carried out through teacher narratives and dialogues concerning their actions, observations, and evaluation of educational practices in the classroom and in a discussion group. The qualitative data were submitted to processes of expert discussion and triangulation to attain greater understanding of content. The results show the value of competencies in improving the professional development of teachers and the educational potential of key competencies for high school students.
