MARTINEZ JIMENEZ, Erick Ricardo; EVANGELISTA GARCIA, Angélica Aremy; CASTANEDA SEIJAS, Minerva Yoimy and ZAMORA LOMELI, Carla Beatriz. A Return to the Place of Origin? The Dilemma of Young Rural Graduates of Universidad Intercultural de Chiapas. RMIE [online]. 2019, vol.24, n.83, pp.971-995. Epub Apr 23, 2020. ISSN 1405-6666.
The objective of this article is to identify and understand the material and symbolic obstacles for graduates with Sustainable Development majors from Universidad Intercultural de Chiapas, Mexico, to return to their communities or regions of origin as agents of local development. The methodology, qualitative and of an ethnographic orientation, uses life stories to describe these young people’s experiences in terms of opportunities, limitations, and expectations to return and integrate into their contexts of origin. The sociocultural practices of social maturity, the shortage of economic resources and production, along with the lack of support from their communities, limit and restrict young people’s participation in their hometowns and affect their low or null interest in working as agents of local development.
