Abstract

HERNANDEZ ROJAS, Gerardo  and  RODRIGUEZ VARELA, Erika Ivonne. Beliefs and writing practices. Comparison of various academic communities. RMIE [online]. 2018, vol.23, n.79, pp.1093-1119. ISSN 1405-6666.

The research presented in this article studied the beliefs and practices of academic writing among 248 students from four university majors (psychology, history, biology, and philosophy) and one high school class. A two-part questionnaire on academic writing was designed and administered. The first part studies beliefs of a reproductive/transmissive and constructive/transactional type, and the second part explores various aspects of academic practices: a) writing tasks, b) difficulties in executing the sub-processes of written composition, c) difficulties in writing texts, d) the evaluation of writing, and e) educational needs. The five academic communities revealed different profiles of beliefs about writing. With respect to writing practices, differences were found in each academic community and in the relations between beliefs and writing practices.

Keywords : writing; students; student beliefs; scholastic community.
