Abstract

PEREZ LOPEZ, María Soledad. The Written Expression of Bilingual University Students (Spanish-Indigenous Language). RMIE [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.70, pp.847-879. ISSN 1405-6666.

This article presents the results of a research project aimed at diagnosing bilingual students' (Spanish-indigenous language) problems of written expression. The starting point was the assumption that these problems are the result in large part of a non-systematic immersion into Spanish. In general, the first language possesses structures and discursive forms that do not coincide with those of the second language, which is not taken into account by the Spanish courses directed to this sector of students. An analysis was made of 70 written samples, which were compared with the production of non-bilingual students. The main results reveal problems in the use of prepositions in Spanish, with effects on the logical articulation of written discourse. The problem must be addressed with additional language methodologies.

Keywords : written communication; bilingualism; indigenous languages; indigenous education; higher education; Mexico.
