Abstract

CASTILLO ROSAS, Adriana. Historical and Political Reconstruction of Indigenous Education in Mexico and the Unofficial Background of Universidad Intercultural del Estado de Hidalgo. RMIE [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.70, pp.691-717. ISSN 1405-6666.

Intercultural universities in Mexico share a common political history in the framework of indigenous education. However, in some cases, their history, unpublished in official media, has given rise to certain projects and is not recognized. This article offers, on one hand, a historical tour of indigenous educational policy as it has transformed over two centuries, according to the government project of the time. On the other hand, the article reports the existence of a feasibility study aimed at analyzing the possible creation of an indigenous university in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico-which was requested and financed by the organization called "Movimiento Indígena Otomí" in 2009. The university is now known as Universidad Intercultural del Estado de Hidalgo.

Keywords : indigenous education; educational policy; higher education; public universities; Mexico.
