This article explores the concepts of truth and fiction in the construction of self in educational contexts. First, it defines the uses of life stories in education, along with their relation to the biographical method; second, it reviews three paradigms of autobiographies that mark the transition between truth and fiction; and lastly, it describes a series of reasons that life stories are fictitious, and the advantages of this posture for the study of educational subjects and their future.
