Abstract
VEGA LOPEZ, Norma Alicia; BANALES FAZ, Gerardo; REYNA VALLADARES, Antonio and PEREZ AMARO, Elsa. Teaching Sixth Graders Strategies for Understanding Expository Texts. RMIE [online]. 2014, vol.19, n.63, pp.1047-1068. ISSN 1405-6666.
Understanding expository texts represents a problem for elementary school students, due primarily to limited training in the use of strategies. The current research analyzes the effectiveness of three reading strategies (patterns of organization, graphic organizers, and summaries) for improving the comprehension of expository texts. A quasi-experimental study was carried out with an experimental group (explicit teaching) and a control group (traditional teaching) in which 54 sixth graders participated. The results indicate that the students in the experimental group had better achievement on the comprehension test and on transferring strategies to new reading situations. In conclusion, the project suggests implications for future research and educational practice.
