Abstract

MOORE HANNA, Pauline  and  NARCISO SANCHEZ, Esther. Epistemic Models of Reading among Mexico's University Students. RMIE [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.51, pp.1197-1225. ISSN 1405-6666.

This study explores the use of three epistemic models of reading (transactional, transmission, translation) (Schraw and Bruning, 1996; Peredo Merlo, 2003) and their relation with the reading assiduity of fifteen Mexican university students. The individuals were characterized, based on information provided through semi-structured interviews and verbal reports. The results situate most of the respondents in the transactional model, which favors reading comprehension. The emergence of mixed systems indicates the appearance of stages of transition between models. A subsequent analysis reveals that other characteristics of approaching the text, such as frequency of reading, variation in strategies, and personalization and criticism of the text, are related to the models and would confirm the existence of epistemologies. Lastly, an analysis is made of the didactic implications.

Keywords : literacy; reading comprehension; higher education; cognitive styles; meta-cognition; Mexico.
