Abstract

ALATORRE, Silvia. Numeracy: A Matter of Concern for Everyone (even those who are bewildered by mathematics). RMIE [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.50, pp.961-986. ISSN 1405-6666.

This article defines the competence of "numeracy": a concept related to literacy in language, that deals with numerical literacy in mathematics (numbers, geometry, relations, statistics, etc.) in the employment and civic activities of adults' daily lives rather than in school contexts. The article also defines the concept of "numerate behavior", which permits assessing competence in numeracy. The basis of the description is numeracy in the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Although Mexico does not participate in PIAAC, the article reports on a similar study conducted on a small scale in our country.

Keywords : numeracy; illiteracy; skills; adult education; education and society; mathematics teaching; evaluation; Mexico.
