For the past fifty years, free textbooks have been one of the major planks of Mexico's educational policy. The program's outstanding trajectory, however, contrasts with the limited amount of study we have dedicated to it. The purpose of this article is to identify free textbooks' strengths and their contributions to educational policy, and to observe the evident challenges yet to be met. Use is made of the historical analysis of social and economic factors, and their contrast with the current trends of public policies.
