Abstract

PETRIZ MAYEN, Marco Antonio; BARONA RIOS, César; LOPEZ VILLAREAL, Rosa María  and  QUIROZ GONZALEZ, Jacqueline. Niveles de desempeño y actitudes hacia las matemáticas en estudiantes de la Licenciatura en Administración en una universidad estatal mexicana. RMIE [online]. 2010, vol.15, n.47, pp.1223-1249. ISSN 1405-6666.

The objective of the research was to evaluate students' attitudes toward mathematics and their performance in the second and fourth semesters of the undergraduate program in business administration at a state university. The research design was correlative. The sample included 124 students, who took two tests: one to evaluate performance and the other to evaluate their attitudes toward mathematics. The technique for processing data was the analysis of conglomerates. According to the findings, students with more motivation for mathematics attained a higher level of performance; a relation was also shown between students' enjoyment of mathematics and performance. The analysis of anxiety suggests that a dose of anxiety among students leads to better performance in mathematics.

Keywords : higher education; academic performance; attitudes; mathematics; motivation; anxiety; Mexico.
