Abstract

MIRANDA, Ana. Educación secundaria, desigualdad y género en Argentina. RMIE [online]. 2010, vol.15, n.45, pp.571-598. ISSN 1405-6666.

This study analyzes the evolution of access to secondary school by males and females from various social groups in Argentina. The approach follows the main activities of young people of secondary school age, in relation to their school attendance, paid employment, and obligations outside of school. The purpose is to determine the degree that participation in domestic and employment activities can affect educational continuity and school performance. Based on an analysis of statistical information from secondary and primary sources, the study sustains that educational and employment inequality among young people and the linking of inequality with aspects of generation and gender require a new definition and updating of the categories of social thinking. The conclusions question the degree of novelty and reproduction of old social structures in the passage between education and employment among young people in the early twenty-first century.

Keywords : social processes; young people; secondary education; gender differences.
