Abstract
CERVINI, Rubén and DARI, Nora. Género, escuela y logro escolar en matemática y lengua de la educación media: estudio exploratorio basado en un modelo multinivel bivariado. RMIE [online]. 2009, vol.14, n.43, pp.1051-1078. ISSN 1405-6666.
This study analyzes the effects of gender on student achievement in language and mathematics in the last year of secondary school in Argentina. Use is made of the 1998 National Census of Secondary School Completion, prepared by the Ministry of Culture and Education. The analyzed database contains 131,714 students from 2,373 schools in twenty states. The use of bivariate multilevel models permitted establishing that gender affects the distribution of achievement, even after controlling student background and school composition. Evidence is found of systematic variation in the magnitude of gender differences in educational achievement throughout the socioeconomic levels of students and schools. The study found that the school affects gender differences and that the effect of gender varies among schools.
