Abstract

Educational institutions face the challenge of selecting teachers best able to perform their functions, in addition to training teachers to take advantage of their individual potential. It is not easy, however, to distinguish teachers with outstanding skills and aptitudes from teachers who simply transmit knowledge. Based on a previous study's identification and differentiation of the skills and aptitudes of good teachers versus talented teachers (Sánchez and Domínguez, 2006), an instrument was developed to evaluate aptitudes and teaching skills by asking teachers to solve ten vignettes representing various practical situations. The instrument proved to be useful for detecting teachers' strengths and weaknesses in relation to the characteristics evaluated; it was also adequate for measuring aspects uncommon in institutionalized evaluations.
