Abstract

SAGOLS TRONCOSO, Feliú D. et al. Integral System to Build and Exploit Geographical Information Systems via Internet. Comp. y Sist. [online]. 2007, vol.11, n.2, pp.157-173. ISSN 2007-9737.

We introduce SIGTERNET (named before e-Edita) which is a tool to build, manage and query Geographical Information Systems (GIS) by the Internet in a client-server architecture. The system has evolved from a project designed in 1996 to establish links between spatial and alphanumeric information. The project was reformulated in 2006 to meet the GIS art of state systems. One of the most important uses of SIGTERNET is the construction of the, so named, Systems to Associate Documents to Maps, which are GIS systems allowing geo-referenced document insertion on maps. The documents (images, texts, spread sheets, videos and so on) are organized in layers and associated to specific map coordinates; as a whole they are accessible through conventional Internet browsers. This kind of systems is useful to share geo-referenced documents, to keep in an organized way raw documents related to a geographical application and as a communication channel to link diverse entities. Our current SIGTERNET version has been developed in the Flash 8.0 platform along 2006 and 2007. We have made an extensive use of XML as well as the most relevant GIS standards.
