Abstract

VILLEGAS-ROMERO, Isidro; OROPEZA-MOTA, J. Luis; MARTINEZ-MENES, Mario  and  MEJIA-SAENZ, Enrique. Path and relation rain-runoff caused by hurricane Pauline in The Sabana River, Guerrero, México. Agrociencia [online]. 2009, vol.43, n.4, pp.345-356. ISSN 2521-9766.

Hurricane Pauline, which occurred between October 5 and 10 of 1997, was an event of high ecological impact due to the flooding, hydric erosion, mass movement and the amount of sediments that it generated in the hydrographic basins of the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca, causing loss of human life and material damage, with partial reconstruction costing $ 447.8 mdd. It is therefore interesting to analyze the factors that contributed to the ecological, economic and social impact on the hydrographic basin. The objective of the present investigation was to trace the path of hurricane Pauline and to establish its relationship with the distribution of rainfall in the state of Guerrero and in the hydrographic basin of the Sabana River, as well as to estimate the relationship between the rainfall and runoff generated by the storm. Tools of spatial analysis were applied such as the program ArcView 3.2, by means of which the path of the hurricane was traced, an estimation was made of the spatial and temporal distribution of the rainfall throughout the state and in the basin during its occurrence, which was correlated to the data of daily runoff registered in two monitoring stations. Results indicate that hurricane Pauline generated rainfall throughout the state of Guerrero during two days continuously, and at the basin level, it produced 2.4 times the mean level of rainfall of the month of October, generating runoff of 133 971 269 m3 in the principal discharge point of the basin, equivalent to 114 times the average runoff of the same month.

Keywords : Hydrographic basin; runoff; hurricane; impact; rainfall; path.
